Mozambican born Ananias Mathe, 29, referred to as South Africa’s most wanted criminal, is not only very dangerous but also mysterious. Although he has escaped from prisons on several occasions, only to resume his evil operations, his escape last year from Pretoria’s C Max prison was the most astounding. He is said to have squeezed through a tiny cell window. He evaded security guards, scaled a high wall and was free. Mathe, who claims to have been trained as a soldier by Frelimo, managed to evade police road blocks and a massive manhunt until he was captured by a private security company. He is currently facing 51 counts of murder, rape, hijacking and armed robbery. He is awaiting sentence at the Johannesburg High Court.
