Monkeys: loveable, aggressive, diverse and full of mischief. Our distant cousins have much in common with us. They’re intelligent, cooperative and have complex relationships. They’re undoubtedly some of the most evolutionary successful species on the planet, with success stories across the globe from Japanese snow monkeys to African baboons and our closest relatives, chimpanzees. Swinging through our family tree quickly reveals the diversity of our monkey relatives. They come in all shapes and sizes, and are certainly not as different from us as we might think. But their world is under threat. All over the world wildlife is losing habitat to human development, and deforestation is robbing monkeys of their homes. The more we learn about them, the more we realise how important it is to save the cheeky chappies that share our family tree.
