Nothing changed the world as we know it more than the process of domestication. Once humans found they could shape their surroundings and control the foods they grew, they gave up a nomadic hunter/gatherer lifestyle and became farmers. Using these techniques, humanity managed to habit-uate pretty much every conceivable environment and climate. But it’s important to note that almost none of this would be possible without certain very special animal species. There were species like cattle, sheep and pigs that provided fresh, transportable milk and food, and also animals like dogs that helped in hunting and the protection of homes, cats that controlled pests and horses that could handle heavy labour and even lead us into battle. With animals by our side, we were ready and able to conquer the world, changing history forever.
