Our Earth's axis is tilted by 23.5 degrees, and the sun’s warmth doesn’t fall evenly over its surface. The result of this is five major climate zones. The hottest are closest to the sun, but, tilted away, the poles get the opposite treatment. Polar regions are treated to the most dramatically different seasons and some of the harshest conditions for life. And yet, some of the most impressive and iconic species make this realm their home. Due to their unique relationship with the sun, the poles are actually uniquely productive. From fearsome polar bears to hyper-active lemmings, polar wildlife has adapted in every direction to thrive in these brutal conditions. In addition, perhaps more than any other kingdom on the planet, polar regions are vital to living conditions the world over. There are many faces to this kingdom of the sun.
