Episode Information

Through impressive underwater recordings, this film uncovers the hidden and unknown lives of these delicate ocean creatures that end up on the menus of the world. During November and December the squid spawning season takes place off the Tsitsikamma coast of South Africa, the largest spawning round for the chokka squid. The squids’ nuptial dance lures the sea creatures that feed on them, the local fishermen who make their living, and the world’s oceanographers and DNA scientists. For the poor coastal inhabitants, the yearly mass spawning of squids means the start of an abundant catching season and much-needed income; for the ocean creatures it’s an irresistible feast; and for the scientists it’s a onetime opportunity to prove theories that could astound the scientific world.
