Episode InformationThe tropics can be found in the broad band around the centre of the Earth, divided into tropical and arid regions. The sun’s rays hit this area at a steep angle, bringing an intense light and heat, shaping dramatic landscapes and a wide range of challenges to all who live there. Tropics are perhaps best known for rainforests; thanks to the extensive rains and lush, fruiting vegetation, these exhibit the greatest biodiversity of any habitat on the planet. The dense and varied vegetation supports a wealth of wildlife, from an unimaginable spectrum of invertebrates right through to giants like elephants. The tropics aren’t just about rainforests, however. They also support remarkable grasslands and even deserts, where yet more incredible flora and fauna can be found. Without a doubt there are many faces to this kingdom of the sun.
