Episode Information

To the golden jackal, the Serengeti plateau in east Africa are hunting ground and home. Golden jackals are carnivores, but they are not conventional predators as they do not survive directly on the massive herds of wildebeest. The jackals are small carnivores that manage to eke out an existence in the vast plains of Africa using their cunning and guile. Their opportunistic skills keep them alive and sustain their remarkable close family lives. This programme looks on the subtle behaviour of one jackal family. We witness the trials and tribulations of three young cubs as they grow up and learn step-by-step how to hunt, eat, and defend by themselves. We encounter their friends and foes and see how the golden jackals deal with the changes of seasons. Jackals mate for life and so once our cubs pass their first year, their parents will conceive their next litter and start the whole learning school once again.
