Despite their endless ingenuity and complex social systems, not all of us are that fond of creepy crawlies. For many their stingers and tendency to swarm is the stuff of nightmares. But few creatures have the complex levels of regimented society as the social insects; these creatures understand that the strength of the individual is nothing compared with the combined power of the group. Animals like termites, ants and wasps can form armies to help them build elaborate homes, defend their territories, grow their own food, raise their young and hunt their prey. The sheer strength and think-tank power of these communities both plagues our nightmares and fuels our imaginations, at times even influencing our own developments. Society is considered the realm of higher beings, but at ground level, hidden amongst the foliage, an army is rising.
